I've designed instruction that includes multimedia texts such as music, videos, and print to help adolescent readers connect to different forms of text regularly. Instruction begins with the sharing of a text that I have chosen for the class. Once students have finished participating in a quick write activity based on the text that I have shared with them, the class has a discussion based on what the students have written down.
A "quick write" activity is when I the instructor propose a thought, or share a text, that students are given 5 minutes to write down a response to. They are given the opportunity to use different texts to demonstrate their knowledge of what has been presented. Students participate in class discussions sharing the different forms of text that they have chosen to use as examples. Once everyone has come to an understanding of the text they create their own example through whatever form of text that they have chosen and share the video, picture, song, poem, or other text that they have chosen to use with the class.
