Commercial presentation
While reading The Life of Frederick Douglas students were asked to make commercials to present to the class that pertained to their lives. The students were asked to use the elements of ethos pathos or logos. Most students agreed that Frederick Douglas wrote his life in a pathos style because he wrote in a way that targeted emotions.

- This lesson plan incorporates students' home language and cultures because they were to choose something the pertained to their lives to advertize it based on the advertizing element they liked best, and in the way that they thought would best reach out to people that related to their culture.
- Before creating these advertizements students were taught about ethos, pathos, logos, and slavery. As a class we had group discussions about justice, diversity, and identity, and students wrote their own definitions of these topics.
- Students demonstrated their knowledge of social justice, diversity, equity, and identity, through their oral presentations (commercials). This students helped students connect to Douglas through their own personal lives.
