Write and Respond
After concluding a Shakespeare unit the class moves on to other forms of poetry such as response poems.
During a "write and respond" exercise, students were given the opportunity to listen to two modern songs that were written in response to one another. In the original song the artist would be speaking to a particular person. In the second song a different artist (the artist that was being addressed in the original song) would be responding to the original song (much like the "response poem").
After sharing an example with the class and passing out the lyrics, students were given the opportunity to come up with their own examples of modern songs that have responses to one another.
Once students shared their songs with the class they got together with a partner and wrote their own response texts. Student A wrote their own poem or song while their partner (student B) would write a response.
This activity took place after reading The Passionate Shepherd to His Love By Christopher Marlowe and The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd By Sir Walter Ralegh
Students used technology in the room while searching for their songs and sharing them with the class.
Some students chose to record their presentations.
